His writings about poverty, racism and social problems in his native Southern United States in novels such as Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre won him critical acclaim, but also made him controversial among Southerners of the time who felt he was deprecating the people of the region. Tobacco Road is a 1932 novel about Georgia sharecroppers during the Great Depression. It was dramatized for Broadway by Jack Kirkland in 1933, and ran for eight years, and remains the second-longest running play in Broadway history. A 1941 film version was directed by John Ford. The novel itself was included in Life magazine's list of the 100 outstanding books of 1924-1944. Caldwell wrote 25 novels, 150 short stories, twelve nonfiction collections, two autobiographies, and two books for young readers.
