Theatro Sheldoniano - Jacobi Fletcher, Oxonii [ Oxford ], 1749. 2nd edition.. Hardback. Contemporary calf, G. [xvi]+383+[1]+31]pp, engraved frontis [ by J Mynde ], title in red & black, The Defensio has a separate title page showing the Radcliffe Camera in vignette, leather rather rubbed & with the upper hinge cracking, corners bumped, pp131-134 partly detached at the gutter leaving the fore edge a little worn, text unmarked & in near fine condition. Old ownership signature of John Davie dated 1757 on the endpaper. Second edition of Simpson's useful edition of Xenophon of Athens' Memorabilia, or defence of Socrates, complete with the Apology. The Greek text appears in the upper part of the page, the latin translation by Johannes Leunclavius [ 1533 - 1593 ] below. Simpson used the earlier editions of Johann August Ernesti & Aemilius Portus as reference.

Modern hardbacks are described as being Cloth bound, even though predominantly they come in paper covered boards pressed to look like cloth. Book grades are given book then dustjacket (if any) Running from F - Fine, VG - Very Good, G - Good, P - Poor. A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
