About This Item

1686 LIVY & Tacitus History of Rome Ab Urbe Condita Caesar Augustus Punic WARS

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."

― Livy, The History of Rome

Few works on the history of Rome are as important and impactful as Livy's 'Ab Urbe Condita' or 'Histories'. Livy began working on this work at the end of the 1st-century BC and covers the earliest times and the foundation of Rome through the reign of Caesar Augustus.

This enormous 1628 edition of Livy was published in Frankfurt and features the annotations and commentary by Jan Gruter and Franz Modius. Gruter's edition of Livy is considered one of the best, in fact,

"The merit of dividing the books of Livy into the chapters now in use belongs to Gruter, who, in the preface to his last edition of that historian, states that he had done the same for other authors, and that future editors were welcome to adopt the divisions which he had suggested."
