About This Item

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. A Very Good + copy of the scarce first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original orange cloth (no dust jacket") which shows light rubbing to the spine ends and board corners and some modest handling soil. Within, the volume shows a black marker mark to the Contents leaf. Published in 1932, the volume provides a Preface by John Galsworthy (who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year of this book's first publication), as well as works by Susan Glaspel, Stella Benson, David Stewart, Katherine Anne Porter, Winifred Holtby, Karl Capek, Martin Armstrong, W. H. Goddard, George Bernard Shaw (winner of the 1925 Nobel Prize in Literature), and many others. The Katherine Anne Porter story, "Virgin Violeta" (1924), which, like her "Flowering Judas and Other Stories" (1934 -- a volume which includes "Virgin Violeta") and "Old Mortality" (1937), deals with the intersection of Catholic Morality and female sexuality, is the first of her stories addressing that theme and is likely autobiographical, and "The Time and Tide Album" contains the first appearance of the story in book form. Porter won the National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize for her book "Collected Stories" which contained "Virgin Violeta". Notably, the volume also contains "Confessional" by Karel Capek, . In its entirety, the volume contains 34 short stories, the sizable majority of which are women authors This volume also contains the "To the Reader" note which appears immediately following the volume's text. (The Note states that it can be removed without damage to the book, but here it remains fully attached.) A nice and QUITE SCARCE Anthology of short stories.
