Controversial Bancroft Prize-winning study asserting that the system of slave agriculture in the American South before the Civil War was economically viable, and that enslaved persons were, on the whole, not treated much worse than free laborers of the day. Fogel went on to share a Nobel Prize medal in economics. Hardcovers in jacket, as pictured; volume 1 is a stated third printing, volume 2 the first. Light wear to books, just a bit of foxing to volume 1; jackets show some rubbing and minor edgewear with short tears, light creaing, tiny chips.
