Very Good. Two quarto (8-1/4" x 11") volumes bound in plum embossed cloth with polished green calf leather spines and corners, matching morocco spine labels. Illustrated with engraved title pages in each volume, 106 steel-engraved plates after Bartlett, and a folding lithograph map of Switzerland.

Second edition, quarto, pp xvi, 420, with 10 plain litho plates, 7 hand coloured aquatint plates, 4 maps (of which 3 are folding), errata leaf present, some marking foxing and thumbing throughout, margins frayed of one plate, contemporary marbled boards, rubbed, a later calf spine, endpapers marked. Three small Penzance Library stamps on the title page, partially removed, but no other markings. [Possibly lacking one plate ? This frequently occurs in this work.] [One of the main accounts of the period, during which a large number of plants were both discussed and collected. Clarke Abel, 1780 - 1826) was a British surgeon and naturalist. Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates.
