London: Kestrel Books, 1976. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO JILL PATON WALSH. Publisher's blue boards with gilt spine lettering. A near fine copy in a VG+ D/W with a short 1.2 cm closed tear with associated crease to the top edge of the front panel and with a hint of rubbing to the corners. Inscribed by the Author to the title page: "To Jill & John/ love from Jane/ 17.5.89/ - a remembrance of things past". From the collection of the late Jill Paton Walsh (1937-2020) and John Rowe Townsend (who died in 2014). Thunder and Lightnings, the author's first novel, was written for (and won) the Kestrel/Guardian prize for a children's novel by a previously unpublished writer, and then won the 1977 Carnegie Medal (a British literary award that annually recognises one outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults). It is conferred upon the author by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). (Most unusually, the author won the medal in 1984, for Handles). Synopsis

Thunder and Lightnings is a children's book, the first novel written by Jan Mark. It won the Penguin Guardian Award for a first children’s book and the Carnegie Medal for 1976. The novel tells the story of the developing friendship between two boys living near RAF Coltishall in Norfolk, who share an interest in aeroplanes, at the time when the RAF is phasing out its Lightning fighters and introducing the Jaguar.
