About This Item

New York: Samuel Coleman, 1843. 72 pp. Original blind & gilt stamped cloth. Twelve woodcut illustrations (several full page). Original patterned endpapers. Original spine laid down at an early date. Slight wear to the illustration on the front board. Light scattered foxing throughout the book as usual. Overall a superior copy of book not usually found in nice condition. Rosove Spence 246.A1; Haskell 186 "The following is a true story of the incidents more minutely detailed in the Appendix, to which the reader is refered for a narrative prepared from the journals of the "Flying Fish". It unfortunately happened that all these journals...Were...Lost...So that the account which I wrote only for the gratifications of a new friends, has become the only remaining history of a highly interesting adventure" - preface. The "Flying Fish's" cruise alone in Antarctic waters. The illustrations by A. T. Agate, one of the expedition's artists, and after which Agate Pass, the northern boundary of Bainbridge Island, is named. The Steve Fossett copy with his bookplate. There seems to be two issues to the binding, one with gilt decorations and one without. This is the preferred issue. 1843
