Lovely Two Volume Set with a New Preface by the Author especially written for this Edition.It's a superb two volume set.The Half-Titles are present and with frontispiece portraits (after walery in the first volume and lovely portrait of Stanley in costume and two further portraits of Stanely taken before his departure to Africa in 1874 and then emerging from Africa in 1877.Volume one has some 16 full-page plates with 42 smaller illustrations in the text and seven maps full page and one of which is a very large map showing the outline Stanley's route.Volume number two shows a list of the illustrations at the front of the book and these include 17 full-page illustrations and 72 smaller illustrations set mostly and wrapped around the text.There are NO previous names or inscriptions present but with one school prize plate of St Thomas's School in Lancaster present to the front pastedown of Volume One.The really attractive cloth boards are in burgundy with gilt,blue and black stamped designs to the front covers and spines with palm tree to the edges,there are bevelled edges to the boards.All the page edges are in rich and lavish gilt.Very strong bindings with no hinge weakness to the joins,black endpapers in fine condition.Lovely clean two volume set.Great set for the collector and rare in this condition.8vo Two Volumes [1899] Large Heavy Set with some extra Postage required .
