About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1878. First Edition. Leather. Very Good. Two volumes. Stout 8vo. Vol. I: Illustrated with 150 woodcuts. Ten maps. Vol. xiv; 522. Vol. II: ix; 568, followed by two pages of publisher ads. The large color map in the rear pocket of Vol. I has closed interior tears along fold intersections, none longer than an inch, and a trifle age-toning; the map in the rear pocket of Vol. II, less so. Both volumes with an index. Marbled endpapers and edges. Hinges of the first volume subtly reinforced with tissue by conservator. Bound in three-quarter brown morocco with gilt rules over marbled boards. Spine with five raised bands; compartments with lettering and flourishes in gilt. Slight wear to edges; marbled covers a bit rubbed. A cornerstone in the Age of Exploration, Livingstone's accomplishments include exploring the great lakes of Central Africa and mapping, for the first time with some precision, their size and position, and searching for the sources of the Nile. He was also one of the first to divine the source of the Congo River and documenting its flow through the continent to the sea. A handsome, presentable set.
