San Bruno, CA: San Francisco County Jail, 1988 and 1989. 1st edition. Soft cover. Fine/No Jacket (as issued). Near Fine. 8vo, 32pp & 60pp, stapled lap wrappers. Set of two issues of this rare chapbook publication containing writing from Lucia Berlin's writing workshop in the San Francisco County Jail #3 at San Bruno, as referenced in her story “Here It Is Saturday” and discussed in her interview in Gargoyle magazine (all the references in that interview appear to be to the Spring 1989 issue). Covers designed by Jeff Berlin. (No Lucia Berlin writing inside, though, it is all by prisoners; she is listed as “Instructor” in the frontmatter, and as the Gargoyle interview indicates, she edited these.) Unmarked copies with minor bumping edgewear to the wrappers.

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
