Life: THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK, by Andrew Kippis. London, 1788. Quarto, pp. xvi, 527 [1], frontis. portrait, half title.

The copies of Brigadier-General Robert James Loyd-Lindsay of Lockinge, 1st Baron Wantage (1832-1901), British soldier, politician, benefactor to Wantage, one of the founders of the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War latterly called the British Red Cross Society, for which he obtained the patronage of Queen Victoria. Awarded the Victoria Cross in 1854 for his actions at the Battle of Alma in the Crimean War. All volumes with his Astra Castra Numen Lumen circular armorial bookplate; from his Overstone Park estate, with that bookplate, as well. It is a bookseller's convenient stratagem to say that the second and later editions are "preferred" – reset, sometimes on better paper, and perhaps slightly different-looking layout. But the seconds are still NOT the first editions of three of the most important voyages ever performed. Sets in contemporary bindings of all first editions of Cook's voyages have become very uncommon on the market.
