A first edition of this important anti-war novel written by John Dos Passos A first edition of John Dos Passos' notable anti-war novel. In this strong critique of the US military and the First World War, Dos Passos paints a vivid portrait of three men's lives as they move between French villages, boot camps, hospitals and brothels during the First World War. Due to its strong anti-war sentiment, the novel was both welcomed and reviled in the US, and earnt Dos Passos considerable recognition. Passos continued to criticise America's capitalistic culture his more experimental trilogy U.S.A. A first edition of this influential work. but not a first printing as the misprint at line 31 page 213 has been corrected from 'signing' to 'singing'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with some rubbing to the boards, the joints, and the spine. Some discolouration at the joint of the rear board. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a little fraying to the head. A little wear to the extremities. Front hinge starting but firm, and webbing visible at the front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound with a little tenderness at pages 202 to 203, and webbing visible at 346 to 347. Pages generally bright and clean, with the majority of foxing limited to the front and rear pastedowns. Good

Synopsis

Part of the generation that produced Ernest Hemingway and Ford Madox Ford, John Dos Passos wrote one of the most grimly honest portraits of World War I. Three Soldiers portrays the lives of a trio of army privates: Fuselli, an Italian American store clerk from San Francisco; Chrisfield, a farm boy from Indiana; and Andrews, a musically gifted Harvard graduate from New York. Hailed as a masterpiece on its original publication in 1921, Three Soldiers is a gripping exploration of fear and ambition, conformity and rebellion, desertion and violence, and the brutal and dehumanizing effects of a regimented war machine on ordinary soldiers.
