About This Item
London, William Heinemann, [1929]. 8vo. Original cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers, most likely designed by the author; pp. [viii], 167, portrait frontispiece pasted onto verso of half-title, signed presentation inscription by the author underneath; the rarely seen beautiful wrappers with old repairs on verso and with a few marginal flaws; apart from very light scattered spotting internally, a very good copy of a rare work. First edition. Arthur Trystan Edwards (1884-1973) was an architectural critic, town planner, illustrator and amateur cartographer who during the First World War served in the Royal Navy. This is his first-hand account of life on the lower deck, hard labour and class division at high seas during a war. However, 'he liked the service so much that he spent twelve peacetime years as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve rating, and considered his naval experiences one of the major cultural influences of his life' (ODNB).
