Five raised bands. Recent touch-up by conservator. Hinges discreetly and archivally repaired. Bottom margin of fore-edge gnawed (see photo) by a 17th century rodent or Restoration period lady's lapdog, who for future readers' sake, much preferred the taste of blank margin to that of text-laden paper. Contayning, All the Important and Remarkeable Passages of State both at Home and Abroad, during Her Long and Prosperous Raigne. Composed by Way of Annals. London, Printed for Benjamin Fisher, and are to be sold at his Shop in Aldersgate-streete, at the signe of the Talbot. 4 bookes in 1.1630. NOTE: Concerning The TABLE, found at the conclusion of Camden's THE HISTORIE OF THE MOST RENOWNED AND VICTORIOUS PRINCESSE ELIZABETH, LATE QUEENE OF ENGLAND, CONTAYNING ALL THE IMPORTANT AND REMARKEABLE PASSAGES OF STATE BOTH AT HOME AND ABROAD, DURING HER LONG AND PROSPEROUS RAIGNE, "containing the heads and principall matters in the Annals of England, during the Reigne of the euer Reknowned and victorious Princesse Elilzabeth, late Queene of England" is, effectively, an index to the primary events covered in detail in the text. Table to the last three annals were either never printed, or are missing. In its place, bound in as three pages,, the Table references to Annals 43 through 45, in ELEGANT OLD MANUSCRIPT HAND.

WILSON Arthur, 1595-1652. The history of Great Britain : being the life and reign of King James the First, relating to what passed from his first access to the crown, till his death. London : Printed for Richard Lownds ..., 1653. 292 [8] p. pp. 2-3 bottom partly illegible by what appears to be a printing error (large smudge, but might be transfer from something placed in the book. In this edition published the same year as a variant, the titlepage reads as 'Iames' and 'accesse' Initials; head- and tail-pieces. Valuable history. No preliminaries prior to title pages. NOTE: Of particular interest to Renaissance scholars. In Arthur Wilson's charming and detailed description, the Spanish Marriage Crisis of 1621 to 1624 between the Duke of Buckingham and the Spanish envoy Olivares was laid out in great detail. The important point here is that amongst Early Modern scholars, there was, or is, a thread of believers who think that Shakespeare's first folio was rushed so as to save the life of the imprisoned 18th Earl of Oxford.

"...As for the "Marriage Crisis," this is a period in English history that seems to have drifted off into obscurity. Dickson has stated to the newsletter that he believes "this is primarily because the Liberal Nationalist and even anti-Catholic bias of most British historians prior to the middle of this century encouraged them to turn a blind eye to the conduct of King James and his young advisor/protege/lover George Villiers-the Duke of Buckingham-in what was, for them, a disgraceful scheme to achieve a permanent peace with Spain through a marriage alliance." This alliance was to have been the marriage of James I's son Charles with King Philip IV's sister, and would have thus been the key event in sealing a permanent peace agreement between England and Spain. From about 1613 through 1623 the marriage alliance was a major foreign policy objective of the Spanish. It became a crisis in England because a majority of the English population wanted no part of such a deal-seeing it as a return of the papacy to the Isle-and it was opposed at higher levels of government by a most interesting (to Oxfordians) set of leaders: the 3rd Earl of Southampton, the 18th Earl of Oxford, and the Earl of Pembroke, one of the dedicatees of the First Folio and Lord Chamberlain from December 1615 through 1626.

The crisis reached hysterical heights when Prince Charles and Buckingham secretly left England in 1623 for eight months to travel to Spain to secure the marriage deal in person. Incredibly, 120 years passed before the Marriage Crisis received the serious attention of scholars again. Thomas Cogswell of Harvard University wrote about it in The Blessed Revolution (1989), but his book is actually about the period immediately following the failure of the marriage proposal, beginning in the fall of 1623 when Buckingham and Prince Charles had returned from Spain empty-handed, and the nation went into a prolonged celebration which included bonfires in the streets throughout London..."
