About This Item

London: Charles Knight and co., 1839. [Islamic Folklore] FIRST LANE TRANSLATION. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (25 x 16cm), pp.xxxii; 618 [2]; pp.[2] xii; 643 [5]; pp.[2] xi; 763 [5]. With frequent in-text wood engravings after Harvey, as well as a decorated title page to each volume. Recently rebacked in brown calf, with slightly raised bands, gilt titles to twin black labels, and further gilt decoration to spine. Using the original brown full calf boards with gilt ruling. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers. A bookseller's ticket to verso of flyleaf of each volume, and a black ink ownership to facing blank of volumes I and II. Lovely crisp, clean copies internally. Moderate wear to original boards, now restored to a robust, attractive condition. Very good. One of the most famous Orientalists, Lane lived in Egypt for many years, frequently disguising himself as a Turk to better assimilate himself into Egyptian society, and to improve his Arabic. His translation of the great compendium of Middle-Eastern folklore was his most successful work, weaving together a linguistic sensibility with an epic style, well suited to the dramatic tale of Scheherazade and Shahryar.
