Small volumes with small print, approximately 120 x 65 mm, 5 x 2½ inches, engraved frontispiece and title page to each volume, coat of arms with motto "honi soit qui mal y pense" to each title page, pages: 1-443; 1-430, bound in full plain morocco, gilt titles to spines, blind decoration to the end of each raised band, double rules to dentelles, gilt rule to edges of covers, edges stained red. Spine of Volume 2 slighty faded, a few light stains to covers, pale browning to frontispiece and title page of Volume 1, strip of brown offset from dentelles to all first and last free endpapers, occasional pale spot, otherwise a very good clean tight set. Title page faintly browned and very slightly dusty, with a couple of tiny brown spots, 3 small ink numbers in lower margin, many pages faintly age-browned, print is a little faint in a couple of places, easily legible, occasional ink "x" in the margin, very small closed tear to lower margin of 1 page, neatly repaired, tiny piece torn from 1 fore-edge margin, tiny worm track in fore-edge margin pages 243-274, continuing as a tiny single hole to final page of the index, most neatly repaired, not affecting text, a few very small light stains or marks, mainly to margins. The book contains a number of simple conjuring tricks: A pretty device to put out and light a candle, to make them marvel that sees it; To make a writing being cast into the fire to leap out again; How to draw an egg through a ring; To make a glass with water burn anything nigh to it; That writing shall not be read unless the same be put first in the water; How to make a candle that it shall not be put out; To turn white wine into red; To kindle a candle to burn in the water; That writings appear of the colour of the paper, and not to be read unless it be holden against the fire; To put a writing into an egg; How to make a ring leap of itself. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
