About This Item

London: Philip Lee Warner, Publisher to the Medici Society [for the Riccardi Press], 1909. No. 499 OF 500 COPIES on handmade paper (and 17 on vellum). 272 x 202 mm. (10 3/4 x 8"). 4 p.l., 108 pp., [1] leaf (colophon).
Contemporary crimson crushed morocco by Maurin (stamp-signed on front turn-in), raised bands flanked by blind rules extending to meet in points on the covers, gilt lettering to spine panel, turn-ins with repeating gilt foliate tool, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Device in blue on half title and title, 12 MOUNTED COLOR PLATES BY W. RUSSELL FLINT printed on paper and bound at the end, each with tissue overlay printed in red. Tomkinson, p. 148. ◆Spine a shade darker than covers, boards slightly soiled, joints and extremities just beginning to show wear, but still a pleasing lustrous binding, and a fine copy internally--clean, fresh, and bright.

This is an appealing copy of one of the series of luxury editions Flint produced for the Riccardi Press of the Medici Society between 1905-24, a series Houfe calls "brilliant." Flint's figures, says Houfe, "are finely modeled and contain elements of a Burne-Jones influence by way of Byam Shaw." One of the leading illustrators of his day, Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was especially known for his seductive nudes, and he somewhat impressively managed to find a home for his favorite subject in this collection of pensées by the Stoic philosopher-emperor. Although Riccardi Press books do not rank with Kelmscotts or Ashendenes, those with plates after Flint have a very substantial appeal..

About Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts

Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books an Manuscripts was established in 1978 on a ping pong table in a basement in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From the beginning, its founder was willing to sell a range of material, but over the years, the business has gravitated toward historical artifacts that are physically attractive in some way--illuminated material, fine bindings, books printed on vellum, fore-edge paintings, beautiful typography and paper, impressive illustration. Today, the company still sells a wide range of things, from (scruffy) ninth century leaves to biblical material from all periods to Wing and STC imprints to modern private press books to artists' bindings. While we are forgiving about condition when something is of considerable rarity, we always try to obtain the most attractive copies possible of whatever we offer for sale.
