[Birmingham, England; February 26, 1812]. [4]pp. Bifolium; printed first page; manuscript letter to third page dated July 4, 1812; integral address leaf. English paper watermarked: "Harris Brothers 1810." Some paper losses at folds affecting manuscript's text, not sense; traces from red wax seal; very good.
Printed circular letter explaining the expansion in 1812 of the business of Thomas Lacey, a manufacturer and dealer in gold and silver luxury goods in Birmingham, England.
Lacey's circular letter describes the recent opening of warehouse London and the engagement of a new superintendent or sales representative there. An integral one-page handwritten letter addressed to a potential customer, "H. Upson, Esq." Lacey introduces himself and offers to supply Upson with the goods he manufactures. Perhaps Lacey called upon Upson at his house and finding him not at home left his circular, almost as one would leave a calling card.
The circular lists over 35 objects manufactured by Thomas Lacey in Birmingham including food utensils and jewelry. The luxury goods are presented under three headings: "Gold," "Silver," and "Gilt, Silver & Black." These include gold seals, "Ear-rings," and bracelets and silver snuff boxes, pencil cases, and "Scissars and Sheaths." The items listed in the final category include combs and ornaments, "Ridicule and Purse Springs," "Dress Buttons," and "Eye Glasses, &c. &c." Among the many food, drink and tobacco related items are nutmeg graters, "Desert [sic] Knives and Forks," cheese scoops, cork screws, and "Segar Tubes &c." Personal health and hygiene objects too are included such as "Vinegarets," tongue scrapers, and tooth picks.
