Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) began his writing career as a novelist, and left behind many classics of the form. However, the negative reaction to 'Jude the Obscure' (1895) caused him to abandon prose altogether, and to forge a new and extremely successful career as a poet.Between 1898 and 1924,as he went from middle-age to old,he published eight wide-ranging and brilliantly written collections.Hardy's poetry explores a rugged fatalist outlook against the dark landscape of his native Dorset.A traditionalist in technique,he nevertheless forged a highly original style, combining rough-hewn rhythms and colloquial diction with an extraordinary variety of meters and forms.
