About This Item

London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1915. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition copy of John Buchan's celebrated espionage novel. A thriller, which follows the 'man on the run' Richard Hannay just before the outbreak of the First World War. Originally serialised in Blackwood's Magazine, 'The Thirty Nine Steps' is the first of five novels featuring Buchan's all-action hero Richard Hannay. A fantastic novel, which has been subject to many adaptations for screen and stage. This is one of the earliest examples of 'man on the run' thriller archetypes subsequently used for films as a plot device. Richard Hannay is an ordinary man who puts his country's interests before his own safety. A smart copy of this fragile work, which was issued in wartime. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper dated 1915. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots to pages. Very Good

Synopsis

JOHN BUCHAN was born in Perth in 1875, the son of a Scottish Presbyterian minister, and educated at Glasgow. He gained a first at Oxford University, where he began writing, producing two volumes of essays, four novels and two collections of stories and poems before the age of twenty-five. He worked briefly as a lawyer, then served as a private secretary in the colonial administration of South Africa after the Boer War. During the war he worked both as a journalist and at Britain's War Propaganda Bureau, eventually becoming Director of Information. He published his most popular novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps , in 1915, and it has never since been out of print. In 1935 Buchan was elevated to the peerage, becoming Baron Tweedmuir of Elsfield, and later that year was appointed Governor General of Canada by King George V. He died on February 11, 1940.
