About This Item

Washington DC: GPO, 1904. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. Pp. 192. Lavishly illustrated with black and white photography, and reproductions of Burns illustrations for The Land of the Long Night by Paul du Chaillu. With a massive folding map of Alaska. Black cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. Index. Binding shows slight wear but for slightly bumped corners, which are worn through. Ex libris, with stamps, including "discard," from the Union Theological Seminary Library, NYC. Rear hinge has been repaired. Despite the detracting qualities, a sturdy copy. Jackson was General Agent of Education in Alaska at time of publication. This comprehensive annual report is an account of the management of domesticated reindeer imported from Siberia to western Alaska as a possible solution to First People's chronic food shortage. The proposal was first suggested by Captain Michael A. Healy, an officer in the United States Revenue Cutter Service. Contains rich anthropological and natural science information. The photos, especially those showing Dutch Harbor, and Eskimo school children, are particularly good. Scarce.
