Bethesda, 1981, Bethesda Stories Co, US First edition , hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, VG/VG condition ,( dj price clipped), 364 pages, illus, maps, ------------------------------------------------ A great deal of history has, necessarily, been woven into these stories of the 1855 to 1872 era. Any author must be exceedingly careful to be completely fair-minded in dealing with Robert E. Lee, Jim Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, Fitzhugh Lee, Wade Hampton, John B. Hood and John B. Gordon; and with Ulysses S. Grant, George Gordon Meade, John F. Reynolds, Phil Sheridan, William T. Sherman, George Thomas, Gouverneur Warren, "Uncle John" Sedgwick and so many others of the high-ranking officers on both sides. But this is more the story of the Troopers and Infantrymen who went to war with their own Homy Town Units, and of the Great Southern Methodist Preacher, Henry Melton. Your author knew Nick and Mary Ellen Cross Young. Other characters have been drawn from the model established by their children and grandchildren. For example, my good friend, Henry Melton used to say, "My Pappy and my Grandpappy befo' me were Circuit Riding Methodist Preachers." The Overstreet.family from Sylvania, Geo'gia were next door neighbors to your author's family when I was a boy in old Mount Pleasant in Washington, D.C. The Father of the family was the Congressman from Screven County. Will and Johnie were the boys whose Grandmother had warned them to "Beware of all Damnyankees, because they carry guns and are mean.
