[San Francisco]: [A. L. Bancroft & Company], [1880]. Promotional broadside for the second edition of McGlashan famous history. 8 1/2 x 11 inches. With a large and very accomplished woodcut of Donner Lake on the front. Unlike the broadside for the first edition, this iteration printed on both sides. Matted. Very good. While OCLC records four copies of the first editon of this broadside, no copies of this edition are located. According to Dorothy Sloan, a cache of the first edition broadside was found some years ago and they were plentiful on the market for a while. Not so this second edition. The price of the first edition was one dollar but the price for the second edition, the first illustrated edition, was three dollars. McGlashan is herein no longer located in Truckee but has removed himself to Santa Cruz. The recto is filled with descriptive text, including a call for agents to handle the book and the verso is filled with testimonials. For the second edition of the book published in 1880 by A. L. Bancroft in San Francisco, McGlashan deleted or revised passages that disturbed Eliza P. Donner Houghton, the Reed women, and William Murphy. The first review on the verso is by Mrs. W. H. babcock (Georgia A Donner) and the second review is by Eliza P. Donner (Mrs. S.O. Houghton) and is highly favorable. Other reviews are by the Hon. James F. Breen, the San Francisco Bulletin, the Bodie News, the Modoc Independent, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Virginia Chronicle and the Sacramento Record-Union.
