About This Item

Washington: Gales & Seaton, 1828.. 63pp. Modern three-quarter morocco and cloth, gilt titles. Boards slightly bowed. Small ink notation on titlepage, bottom corner of last leaf torn, text somewhat tanned. Good plus. Lacks the folding muster rolls. The controversy surrounding Jackson and his execution of several alleged deserters during the War of 1812 is here rekindled, no doubt due to Jackson's first presidential campaign. The present document reviews the court- martial trial at which the men were sentenced to death, particularly in regards to which term of duty stands when state militiamen are called into federal service. At the time, a Tennessee state militia tour was three months, while the federal tour was six. In their defense, the men believed they had fulfilled their obligations, and maintained their innocence until their execution, though there is no specific response to the charges of mutiny also leveled against them. Scarce, OCLC locating only six copies. OCLC 9866569.
