About This Item

[Civil War][Emancipation] [Lincoln] Tender of the Nomination for the Presidency to General McClellan and his Speech of Acceptance. [New York?]: [no publication information] 1864. Broadside. 29.5 cm. Printed on both sides. On verso: General McClellan's Platform, introduction followed by a letter to President Lincoln, dated "Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, Camp near Harrison's Landing, Va., July 7, 1862;" Signed: G.B. McClellan, Maj.-Gen., commanding. Text printed in two columns divided by a single rule. Edge chips, stains, and folds. Good.

OCLC shows one holding (Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.) The New York Historical Society has a broadside printing of General McClellan's Platform but the verso is blank. Rare Book Hub shows no listing for this item and one auction or catalog listing for General McClellan's Platform in 1913. McClellan outlines his opposition to the immediate emancipation of the slaves and advocates accepting back into the Union any states that wish to re-join (presumably including the right to hold slaves). The letter to President Lincoln outlines McClellan's views on the principles of warfare to be adopted in the present conflict, arguing against molestation of the civilian population, and urging the president to postpone the abolition of slavery. A very scarce Democratic broadside promoting the candidacy of General McLellan and his platform of reconciliation with the South (although he repudiated the portion of the Democratic platform seeing a negotiated peace with the Confederacy).
