Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1841. First Edition (?). First Printing. Leather. Bound in early 20th Century half brown morocco over marbled boards, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, gilt borders in remainder, double gilt borders on covers, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. Half-Titles in each volume. The book was originally serialized in Blackwood's Magazine (1839-1840). This is the first English, and first authorized, edition; the text was pirated and published in Philadelphia in 1840-41, a few months before this first authorized edition. Printed in Edinburgh by Ballantyne and Hughes. [NCBEL, III, 970; Sadleir, 3034; Wolff, 7072]. . Spines lightly sunned, some very minor wear on edges and corners, else fine; unmarked, seemingly unread, tigh, square, and clean, with no foxing or stains. A very handsome set. NEAR FINE.. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. viii, 403; (ii), 391; (ii), 429 pp .
