About This Item

Basle, Les libraires associés, 1749. 12mo (16.2 x 9.3 cm). lxxvi, 407 pp. Later mottled full morocco. Spine with five raised bands, and morocco label with gilt borders and title. Edges speckled red. = The first book that includes a notion of "deep time" (two billion years, instead of just 6000 years). Because of this heresy, the author concealed his identity, except, of course, that "telliamed" is just De Maillet in reverse. "Benoît de Maillet (1656-1738) was a well-travelled French diplomat and natural historian. He was French consul general at Cairo, and overseer in the Levant. He formulated an evolutionary hypothesis to explain the origin of the earth and its contents. De Maillet's geological observations convinced him that the earth could not have been created in an instant because the features of the crust indicate a slow development by natural processes. He also believed that creatures on the land were ultimately derived from creatures living in the seas. He believed in the natural origin of man" (Wikipedia). Rather weak dampstaining throughout. Spine foot rather amateurishly repaired; otherwise, good.
