Minor edge and corner wear; lightly scuffed and scratched; spine is lightly creased; some light shelf wear; overall a very crisp and clean used FIRST EDITION! Very rare and hard-to-find title! Black and red pictorial wrapper with black lettering. 40 very clean unmarked and uncreased historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! Extremely scarce and out-of-print FIRST EDITION! "An old name, TEIONKWAHONTASEN, means 'sweetgrass grows around us or surrounds us.' It is an appropriate and useful reminder of the past, of some of the old-fashioned sweetgrass sewing baskets that used to be made here. Prized as much for their fragrance as for their usefulness and fine quality, they are rare today, found only occasionally at antique shops and auctions. The cover photographs, taken around 1900, shows three ladies surrounded, as they weave, by a large number of these baskets, ranging from about nine to twelve inches in diameter. It is a solemn portrait of concentration, of artists at work. Though they may not have considered themselves to be 'artists,' the beauty and strength of their work speak for them-silently, with great power.......
