About This Item

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1894. First Edition. Cloth. Good. First Edition. 284 pages plus 40 pages of advertisements. 7 1/2 x 10 inches. Original blue cloth spine and grey cloth boards. Plain blue cloth spine. Binding approaching loose. Many plates which illustrate fraternity logos, professional societies, and personages. Alma Mater music insert a bit proud. The Class Yearbook (Annual) for the Class of 1894 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a small technical school down the road from Harvard. A few plates with dampstaining, occasional smudges, but on the whole a nice copy. Cloth. Probably printed by the E.B. Sheldon Co, New Haven, Conn. whose advertisement on page 39 notes they make a specialty of College Annuals. By the same token, many of the unmarked illustrated plates may be by John Andrew & Son Co. Illustrators and Manufacturers of Fine Books, Boston Mass whose ad on the previous pages notes the same. Other plates are marked by John A. Lowell & Co. Boston. It was a common practice then and now to exchange free advertising for work done on college annuals and newspapers.

The MIT Varsity Football Team, Season of '92 photograph (opposite page 162) includes black athlete and running back William Arthur Johnson (Class of '94). Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience by Gates and Appiah note this was one of the early successes in black athletes earning sports roles in predominately white schools.
