Original greenish-blue cloth elaborately blocked in blind to both covers and in gilt to spine, coated yellow endpapers, possibly sometime replaced, top edges rough, others untrimmed; pp. [x] + 230 + [ii]; with fine wood-engraved frontispiece retaining original tissue-guard, decoratively panelled title-page, and 3 other engraved plates by the Dalziel brothers alongside decorative chapter-headings and tailpieces throughout; a very good, sound, and bright copy, sometime almost invisibly recased with some expert, and barely noticeable, internal strengthening to spine ends with complimentary cloth, retaining the original endpapers, with the old bookseller's label, "King" of Brighton to front pastedown endpaper, internally generally very good with a little scattered spotting and occasional marking and a neat, old, and sympathetic, archival tape repair to fore-edge margin of the half-title and frontispiece scarce. First edition thus: "A New Translation". A collection of 16 fairy tales by Andersen. This is a very early collection in English. Mary Howitt's translation of the previous year, Wonderful Stories For Children, was the first appearance in English of his Danish fairy stories. The 16 tales printed here are specifically selected for their suitability for young readers, with a distinction being made in this respect from other editions of Andersen's tales. This collection includes "The Little Swineherd"; "The Red Shoes", "The Wild Swans"; "The Little Pair of Lovers" and "The Emperor's Nightingale".
