About This Item

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. 1863. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE "B" HARDCOVER, GREEN CLOTH BINDING, GILT TO TOP EDGE, with pebbled pattern and in-blind borders; gold lettering, chocolate-colored endpapers, frontispiece with tissue overlay; 225 pages, with 22 pages of publisher's advertising at end dated November, 1863. Page 11 of publisher's advertising indicates the book "Tales of Wayside Inn and Other Poems" is not priced, but "Nearly ready." Condition of binding: Shelf wear, light bump to one corner (and "showing"). Expected age browning/tanning to edges. Internally: Faint pencil marks by book dealer on first free endpaper, brown spots from "breakdown of paper" on tissue overlay. Ownership name on frontispiece; and on half-title page with date (1863). Minor bumps to text block, causing light creases to corners of pages. Small corner piece of page missing on "Contents" page. Advertising pages: Shaken, tears to gutter area of several pages. Else, overall, book is Good Plus (surprisingly in better condition than usual for this title based on other books of this title we've had in the past). Here is a wonderful, beautiful collection of Longfellow's poems, including "Tales of a Wayside Inn" (which reveals his narrative gift) and "Paul Revere's Ride." Longfellow was born February 27, 1807 in Portland Maine and died in Cambridge, Mass. March 24, 1882. During his career, he was a prolific and popular poet, and was hailed by critics and readers for his poems and his readings. He should get recognition in the history of American popular culture for his poetry - his verse - the very popular American poet of the 19th century. A collectible book. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly. . First Edition, First State B. Hardcover.
