About This Item

UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn.VG+.No owner inscrptn present, previous one though, amateurishly removed from colour pictorial world map illustrated front free endpaper, with slight detrimental effect.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, colour pictorial artwork by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone, illustrated boards; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks, tears or splits present, both internal endpaper hinges without cracking, solid and sound - but hinge to to pp8/9 cracked - no others affected.Head+foot of spine/backstrip and all corner tips, minisculely bumped with reciprocal rubbing and miniscule loss and very minimal, minor superficial scoring/indents to either board.Top+ fore-edges inevitably aged/toned; contents bright and tight, crisp, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, other than my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued, 1st edn,6-53pp [paginated] includes part (the majority)+full-page colour illustrations by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone,to all pages,11 tales from around the world; plus [unpaginated] colour pictorial illustrated title page.
Tales from New Zealand,Scotland,Mexico,England,Australia,Africa, Persia,Europe,China and Russia. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age and nature - i.e a child's book, and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only those few faults described that prevents a slighty higher grading.Despite them,it really is an acceptable copy for brightness and cleanliness.
Highly collected and prolific children's book illustrators,a scarce and unusual item/ephemera in Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the A & J Grahame Johnstone's canon.

Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone, twins born 1928.Active from c1949,Janet died in a tragic accident 20th January,1979,her sister surviving her until 25th May,1998.Children's book illustrators specialising in large, brightly coloured gift books (mainly published by Dean & Son),in which the full-page illustrations normally surround the passages of the text.Janet specialized in animals and birds,Anne focused on the period costumes that so dominated their work.
Their work represents a recent manifestation of the nursery traditions mass-marketed by Mabel Lucie Attwell and updated by Hilda Boswell, characterised by unfailing sentimentality and a palpable determination to please.Between them they published over 200 titles;with over 5,000 illustrations in total: 1,000+ in b/w and 4,000+ in colour, and 10 technical equestrian books.
