London: Oxford at the Shakespeare Head Press. 1939. 1st ed thus, octavo, pp.xl, 311, incl Index, half-title vignette, b&w fronts. port., and plates, ex-lib with remains of sticker and pocket to ffep and white ink number lower spine, otherwise clean, orig bds., rubbed, spine faded, uncut, good condn. With the reproduced frontispiece from the 1710 edition. A Tale of a Tub was the first major work by Jonathan Swift published anonymously in 1704. Included are 'Battle of the Books' and the 'Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit'. Swift also wrote: An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729). 1st edition thus. Boards.
