About This Item
London: Ward, Lock, & Bowden, 1894. First English edition, of which this is one of 250 numbered, large-paper copies on Van Gelder handmade paper; 8vo, pp. [6], 345; gravure portrait frontispiece, and 1 gravure plate; original parchment-backed blue paper-covered boards, lettered in gilt on spine; nice copy. According to Colbeck, this issue preceded the trade issue "by some days." All three tales had been published separately in the U.S.: the second one, issued by Harper with authorization, and the first and third pirated by Lovell. All three had appeared in The New Quarterly in England. Sassoon dismissed "The House on the Beach" as "one of Meredith's least accomplished works, but thought "The Tale of Chloe" had been "less admired than it deserved ... She [Chloe] is one of Meredith's finest and most convincing creations." Collie, p. 84; Colbeck, p. 544.
