About This Item

London: C. and C. Whittingham, 1825. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 3.5". None. A beautifully bound of Cowper's Table Talk and Other Minor Poems. William Cowper (1731 – 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the best modern poet", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. Also includes, but not limited to, Charity, Expostulation and The Progress of Error. Illustrated throughout by Richard Westall. Richard Westall (1765 – 1836) was an English painter and illustrator of portraits, historical and literary events, best known for his portraits of Byron. He was also Queen Victoria's drawing master. In a calf binding with gilt decoration to boards. Externally generally smart, lightly rubbed in places, with some discolouration to the extremities. Joints starting but firm. Pages generally bright and clean with the occasional spotting and some browning due to age. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper dated 1904. Very Good
