About This Item

London: J. Waugh; J. Noon, R. Hett and J. Davidson, 1741-1749 . Hardback. Fair. 8" by 5". None. Two first editions by eighteenth century religious dissenters Henry Grove and Samuel Chandler are bound together in this volume. This volume contains to first editions of philosophical works by eighteenth century religious dissenters. The book opens with the first volume of A System of Moral Philosophy by Henry Grove, which precedes A Vindication of the Old Testament by Samuel Chandler. Thomas Amory edited and wrote the last eight chapters of A System of Moral Philosophy, and the work was published after Grove's death in 1738. In this work, the English Nonconformist minister outlines his metaphysical and ethical system. Called the 'uncrowned patriarch of dissent' in the latter part of George II's reign, Samuel Chandler was an English Nonconformist minister and pamphleteer. Amid the Deist controversy, which questioned the intervention of God after creating the universe, Chandler published his response to Thomas Morgan's The Moral Philosopher. Ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper reads, '1st. System of Moral Philosophy. 2. Vindication of the History of the Old Testament'. Same ink inscription to the verso of the following page. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page of A System of Moral Philosophy. Inscription by John Gray, 1751. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, rather worn. The cloth is missing from the boards, with only a small amount of cloth remaining to the centre of the spine. The boards are held by cords only and may detach with further handling. Lacking the front and rear endpapers. The front free paper is disbound but present, and the rear endpaper is very loose. Internally, the binding is tender. Pages are a little age-toned with light scattered spotting throughout. Fair
