About This Item
Barry Lopez says in this conversation about conservation with Julia Martin, "...place itslef is not all that important. It's your intimacy with the place that is really important...It doesn't make sense anymore to have these ideas about 'me' and 'mine' and the terrible burden that has been created by so-called advanced nations about the primacy of ownership.
"There must be confrontation, and there must be some way ot replace war with reconciliation. Everybody is going to have to get by on less.
"...It's the relationships that are important. And its the discerning of this three dimensional set of relationships that awakens you to how complex this is at any one moment."
Written in tribute to the great nature writer, Martin presents us with an important exchange she had with Lopez in the fall of 2010 at his home in Finn Rock, Oregon, along the McKenzie River. Lopez died on Christmas Day in 2020.
