Description:
London: John Murray, 1863. First edition. With a folding engraved frontispiece (a little worn and marked, and poorly folded, a little fraying at the margins), eight other plates, 12 illustrations within the text, a folding map at the rear in good condition, octavo, pp xvi, 395, endpapers rarther soiled, title page thumbed and age-toned, contemporaqry half morocco and marbled boards, the paper cover to the boards worn through in places, the leather only a little rubbed. From the library of Compton House, Liverpool, with their stamp on the spine, a label and stamp on the front endpaper, and a few stamps throughout. Unfortunately, a previous owner has started to try and erase the stamps and has got to work on the title page, the next page and the first page of text with the result that there is considerable loss of surface to the page and in one case an actual hole; fortunately common-sense, exhaustion or death interrupted them - it would have been better if they had not started their labours. Description:
London: Printed for Private Circulation, 1855. Illustrated with line drawings, a folding coloured map, a folding map printed in blue, pp xx, 507, all edges gilt, a little occasional foxing, otherwise clean internally, contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, raised bands, only very slight signs of wear. The publication was authorised by Queen Victoria who had purchased the manuscript after the author's death. The printing was very limited, probably under 150 copies. There are extensive lists of plants and animals, extending to eighty pages. [A unique copy, extra illustrated with 25 original topographical photographs, probably by the original owner - Charles F.S. Chambers - whose armorial bookplate appears on the front endpaper. Though the images are small, (mainly c. 60mm x 65mm), they have great charm and are largely in good condition with only slight fading. They are all of local interest - Falls of Garrvalt, Birch Wood near Balmoral, Abergoldie Castle etc. They are all neatly indexed in… Read More

Oxford at The Clarendon Press, 1931. Translated into English by W. B. Grove and edited by A.H. Reginald Buller & C.L. Shear. Three volumes, folio, pp xx, 248 + 5 plates; xxi, 302 + 34 plates; xvi, 206 + 22 plates, amazingly clean internally, later black cloth with very slight marking, in the scarce dustwrappers which are slightly worn torn and marked. [Please note - The pages are uncut and partially unopened.] An unusually fine set. Extremely heavy - extra postage will be needed if sendin overseas or to remote parts of the UK. [The Tulasne brothers major contribution to mycology was the establishment of pleomorphism among fungi by a wealth of accurate and detailed observation, of which this work is the culmination. Originally published in Latin, 1861 - 1863, this English translation's title continues "exhibiting especially those facts and illustrations which go to prove that various kinds of fruits and seeds are produced, either simultaneously or in succession, by the same… Read More

Blanche Henrey 883, mentioning that not all copies of this edition have the two plates, and ours does not. In effect the third edition, though the preceeding two have the title "The Scots Gardiners Director". [Sir James Justice (1698 - 1763) was a Scottish horticulturalist/gardener. His works on gardening were distributed in much of Britain and Ireland. He reportedly had a passion for botanical experiments, which he pursued at the expense of his finances and family. Blanche Henrey 878. [Sir James Justice (1698 - 1763) was a Scottish horticulturalist/gardener. His works on gardening were distributed in much of Britain and Ireland. He reportedly had a passion for botanical experiments, which he pursued at the expense of his finances and family. Indeed the later miniaturist John Kay wrote that tulipomania was the cause of him parting with his estate at Crichton and the purchase of a smaller one. His divorce and expulsion from the Fellowship in the Royal Society has been blamed on the expenses he put into greenhouses and soil mixtures.
