About This Item

New York:: Skira / Rizzoli International, 1976.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: mustard color cloth; bookplate, otherwise a Very Good+ book, with a Very Good+ dust jacket.. Small Folio (about 13.5 inches tall) . Bibliography, index of names and places. Description: Includes 146 b&w illustrations and 65 in color. The color plates are tipped-in. From the peculiar nature and circumstances of their country, Swiss artists have never ceased to draw an inspiration of their own, stimulated and enriched by frequent contacts with foreign art. Here then are the two sources on which Swiss painting steadily drew down to the nineteen century and which it combined in endlessly different ways: on the one hand, the great movements and personalities of European art; on the other, the powerful, at time uncouth, and all to often underrated strains of a native tradition rich in talents and original forms. After tracing the course of Swiss painting from the Early Middle Ages through the intervening centuries, this survey ends at the dawn of the twentieth century with the mature works of Ferdinand Hodler.
