About This Item
Scribner, 1993. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Association copy, inscribed on the half title in the year of publication to Terry Tempest Williams and her husband: "For Brook and Terry, Western angels, sweeties, heroes, stay shining in the light. Love, Bob. June 25, 1993." the author s first novel and a finalist for the National Book Award. His first book, the story collection Easy in the Islands, won the American Book Award (now the National Book Award) for first fiction, a defunct category. His second story collection won the Prix de Rome. Rich with descriptions of nature, Swimming the Volcanoes is about expatriate intrigue on a fictional Caribbean island and, according to the Washington Post, "ranks with the best of Conrad and Hemingway." Most of his fiction has been set in the Caribbean or Florida, and he teaches at Florida State University. A fine book in near fine jacket, with only little bulging at front flap where it was tucked into this (big) volume at some point. Additionally signed on the title page. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
