In its prime, Sutter's Fort became the nucleus of all new settlement in upper California, the stopping point for new settlers and government expeditions, including that of Fremont and Kit Carson. This book traces the solidification of Sutter's empire, his siding with American interests during the Bear Flag revolt, and the critical part played by Sutter's Fort as headquarters and haven through a succession of turbulent years. Also tells of the Donner party incident, the construction of the Coloma sawmill, and of the discovery of gold. Typography and binding design by Carl A Koenig.
