by Rathborne, Aaron

Condition: Very good

London: Printed by W.Stansby for W.Burre, 1616. Hardcover. Very good. First edition of "the first comprehensive English textbook on Survey" (Singer, History of Technology, III, p. 541). Folio, 28.25 cm x 18.5 cm. pp. [10], 157, 152-175, 172-181, 186-228 pp. Copper-engraved pictorial title-page (surveyors at work with theodolite and plane-table) by William Hole; portrait of the author as frontis, numerous woodcuts in the text, but lacking the portrait of Prince Charles. Leaf O3 is a cancel (as in other copies). Early calf boards (worn at corners) with sympathetic modern leather spine, text very clean. Bookplate of W.C. Mylne--almost certainly the engineer and architect William Chadwell Mylne (1781-1863), who came from a long line of masons, surveyors, and architects--on front pastedown. This influential textbook addressed the practical everyday needs of surveyors more realistically and technically than had been done before, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional standards and placing surveying firmly among the mathematical sciences. The first two books deal with the elements of geometry, the third book describes surveying instruments and their application, and the fourth discusses legal and manorial issues. STC 20748; ESTC S116149.
