From the Folio Society letter: " Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the 17th and 19th centuries' great painters of plants and animals, standing alongside artists like Redoute, Ehret and Bauer. Many books on botanical art reproduce images from the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, a selection of 60 engravings she published in 1705... Merian's paintings contian subtleties of colour and drawing which could not be reproduced by 18th century methods, making the originals incomparably superior to the engravings."
