About This Item

Hartford, Connecticut: The J. B. Burr Publishing Co., 1879. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Take a stroll through 19th-century New York City in this lively survey of "representative men" & important places from the Great Metropolis of New York, in 854 pages, replete with steel engravings on somewhat heavier, darker beige paper throughout, including frontispiece. In charming 19th-century vernacular, the book's 95 chapters cover Wall Street in olden & modern times, gambling mania & its fruits, High life, Central Park, "Life among the Lowly," Five Points, social evils, the Bowery, how different groups spend their Sundays, street-walkers, various religious groups & the peculiarities of some churches, Harlem, crime & financial "irregularities,'' the Stock Exchange, prominent local newspapers & newsmen, the police force & jails, "A shoddy party,'' "Blackmailing as an art,'' "Fast life & recreations of the fast class,'' & much more. Smith (1813-1879, a native of his beloved city, served as an Army chaplain during the Civil War. Orig. published in 1869 (though no copyright in this book), this is an 1879 printing, same publisher. Hardcover 8vo in publisher's deep green cloth stamped in gilt script to front & spine, title blind-stamped to rear board. Heavy external rubbing, fraying, & missing 1.5" section of cloth on upper spine cause condition to be downgraded to Fair. But the interior is Good: very clean, with the occasional spot, unmarked save for 2 names in pencil to ffep. Front hinge is cracked, binding otherwise solid & secure. One page in Table of Contents has come completely detached & is ragged around edges. No DJ, as issued. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
