Colophon states limited to 150 copies, printed by Lithography, hand colored and signed by the artist; #48. One of the very few early wordless novels that is a happy story. A summer romance (story of artist fleeing his studio for the summer, sails, falls in love, summer ends, girl departs, artist returns to studio in the city). 21 cm., paper covered boards with sailboat image on front cover, 31 ff., 30 lithograph images hand-colored in shades of pink and blue printed recto; verso blank. Book is very good to near fine with contents bright and binding firm. Covers are lightly toned with handling marks. Slip case is intact but starting to split and has portions missing top and bottom. Inscription opposite title page in blue pen by Floethe. Richard Floethe - (1901 - 1988) was a prolific artist of considerable stature. He found early success in New York City as an industrial designer and book illustrator and by the mid-1930s, his work was internationally known. From 1936-39 he was administrator and art director of the New York City poster division of the WPA art projects. From 1942-43 he was art director of the New York War Service. During his long, successful career as a book illustrator, he designed and/or illustrated nearly 100 books.
