London, United Kingdom: Chatto & Windus, 1905. Originally published 1874. Stoddard visited the South Sea Islands first in 1864 and from there wrote his Idyls - letters to a friend, later making 3 further visits and writing 4 more books on the area including this one. His writing style is one of charmed delight, and very endearing. Later he accepted the chair of English literature in the University of Notre Dame. CONDITION Green cloth bds with bright Gilt title and decorative front (bds have very sl speckling else unworn) pp x 319 copy is bright and clean with gutter crack to paper at front ep exposing mull which is tight and intact. A very nice copy.. Re-Issue. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
