About This Item

Chatto & Windus, 2006. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/As New. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A like-new copy of SUITE FRANCAIS. There is no bookplate, markings or writing. The binding is tight. This is a first edition, first printing with the full number line ending in 1. The dust jacket is also like new, and is not price clipped. Dark blue cloth boards, with gilt title on the spine. Translated from the French by Sandra Smith, and published in the UK in 2006. This novel is the first two of a planned five parts. Part 1 (A Storm in June) tells of the exodus from Paris on the approach of the Germans in WWII, and part 2 (Dolce) tells of life in a Nazi occupied French village. The novel is not about events, but is instead about the struggles, kindness, cooperations and treachery of people trying to survive in France during the war. Paul Gray in the New York Times called the book "stunning" and argued that it ranks with '"the greatest, most humane and incisive fiction that conflict has produced." Irène Némirovsky was already a well published author when she started SUITE FRANCAIS. She was born in Ukraine in 1903, the daughter of a successful Jewish banker. The family fled the Russian Revolution, moved to Finland, and eventually settled in France. In 1940 during the German occupation, Nemirovsky and her husband and daughters left Paris for a small town in the countryside, where she secretly began writing SUITE FRANCAIS. She was arrested in 1942. The remaining three parts were never written. Némirovsky was murdered in Auchwitz at age 39.
