About This Item

London: Smith, Elder & Co.,, 1858. First edition of the social theorist's practical proposals regarding maintaining British rule in India. Martineau expands on her recently published historical account, British Rule in India (1857), to consider contemporary developments and issues such as religious liberty, equitable taxation, and education. The work was published in the aftermath of the 1857 Indian Rebellion and the beginning of Crown rule. Martineau (1802-1876) sought to examine the implications of this new political structure and point out the mistakes of past governance: "The time has arrived which will determine whether we shall lose India very soon, or keep it as a more valuable portion of the British Empire than it has ever been yet". Octavo. Original brownish grey cloth, printed paper label to spine, With 18 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Extremities rubbed, corners bumped, spine ends worn, damp stains and soiling to cloth and label, contemporary small ink numbering to half-title and p. v, else contents clean: a very good copy.
