Venice: Domenico Nicolini, 1564. Second Edition of the first volume of the author's principal treatise in legal philosophy. Vazquez Menchaca was an outstanding Spanish legal scholar of the sixteenth century. Jose Antonio Maravall refers to him in Carlos V y el Pensamiento Político del Renacimiento (Madrid, 1960) as "el más negador de la idea imperial". Writing during the reign of Philip II of the earlier reign of Charles V, it was Vazquez Menchaca who most vigorously challenged the notion of an imperial sovereignty which transcended that of the monarchies comprising the Holy Roman Empire. Two further volumes were published, each consisting of three parts. Palau 354052.
